At its core, the New York Foundation for Fair Contracting exists as a public works construction watchdog. While the NYFFC monitors all areas of public works construction, ensuring that workers on a project receive their full wages and benefits is key. All construction workers on a public work job site are due the area prevailing wage (rate + benefits), paid for the classification/trade actually performed, for all hours worked.
Dishonest contractors try to skirt the law by not paying workers the full prevailing wage. Others may misclassify workers to pay them a lower rate, or do not pay them the appropriate overtime rate for additional hours accrued. Workers experiencing underpayment, misclassification and more are often afraid to speak up for fear of losing their jobs.
The NYFFC can help workers pursue confidential complaints regarding their employment. This information is then passed along to the proper state agencies to investigate the complaint and ensure that workplace labor and safety laws are followed, including but not limited to fringe benefit credits, prevailing wage rates, and more.
